Why has it taken so long to find out what it does?

The mechanism was discovered little over a century ago, and only now are we beginning to understand with some degree of certainly what the mechanism could do. There are many reasons for this and the incomplete and fragmentary state of the mechanism is certainly one key factor. Secondly, the importance of mechanism has been consistently overlooked. Probably due to speculation that such an improbable device is just that, and all the observations were exaggerated by overenthusiastic researchers. However, perhaps the opposite is true, and the mechanism has continued to take researchers by surprise by the simplicity and ingenuity of its design. Ultimately it has taken some of the highest tech imagery, and a highly multi-disciplinary team to finally piece together much of the Mechanism’s function. However, the research is far from complete, and there is a general opinion that the Mechanism hasn’t revealed all it secrets yet.
